NILC Statement on Decision by Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt to Oppose Extreme Attack on Right to Education for All
WASHINGTON — Kica Matos, president of the National Immigration Law Center, issued the following statement following today’s announcement from Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt that he opposes State Superintendent of Education Ryan Walters’ extreme proposal to force schools to collect data on the immigration status of Oklahoma families enrolling their children in public schools:
“We should all heed Governor Stitt’s call that children feel safe at school and not be used as political pawns. The Governor’s sound rejection of a radical attempt to undermine the right to education is a result of the concerted advocacy of parents, educators, and advocates across Oklahoma who mobilized to oppose it. We will continue to work with communities across the country to defend the right of all children to learn.”
Earlier this year, NILC submitted a public comment opposing Superintendent Walters’ extreme proposal.
NILC leads the Education for All Campaign to defend the constitutional right of all children, regardless of immigration status, to a free public education.
