As Biden Admin Moves to Strengthen DACA, NILC Urges Congress to Pass Lasting Pathway to Citizenship

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security today announced a new federal regulation updating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy.

Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center and the NILC Immigrant Justice Fund, issued the following statement:

“DACA has positively transformed the lives of more than 800,000 immigrant youth and their communities. Strengthening the policy is a crucial step, but it is not a substitute for congressional action. Ultimately, we must also seize the historic opportunity before us to provide a permanent solution for millions of undocumented immigrants who call the U.S. home. In addition to protecting DACA recipients through rulemaking, we expect the Biden administration and congressional leaders to deliver a lasting pathway to citizenship, not only for DACA recipients, but for as many of our community members as possible.

“NILC has been fighting alongside immigrant youth and immigrant communities for over two decades to ensure that they can remain and thrive in this country, which is their home. We remain steadfast in our commitment to ensure that all immigrants who call the U.S. home are recognized and have the freedom to thrive.”
