The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” adds restrictions to these federal programs:
- SNAP
- Medicaid and CHIP
- ACA Health Insurance Subsidy (known as Obamacare)
- MedicareChanges to Tax Credits & Deductions for 2025
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)
Starting July 2025, only these immigrants can get SNAP:
- Lawful permanent resident adults (Green Card holders, some need to meet a 5-year waiting period)
- Lawful permanent resident children (No waiting period applies)
- Cubans or Haitians, with a range of current or past statuses, and
- People from Micronesia, Palau, or the Marshall Islands living in the U.S.
Important! U.S. citizens or eligible immigrants in your household can still get SNAP.
Medicaid and CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program)
Starting October 2026, only these immigrants can get Medicaid or CHIP:
- Lawful permanent resident adults (Green Card holders) who have met the 5-year waiting period
- Cubans or Haitians, with a range of current or past statuses, and
- People from Micronesia, Palau, or the Marshall Islands living in the U.S.
In many states, lawfully present children or pregnant immigrants can also enroll with no waiting period.
Affordable Care Act Insurance (ACA) Health Insurance Subsidies
Starting December 31, 2026, only these immigrants will qualify for the ACA subsidy, which helps make health insurance more affordable:
- Lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders),
- Cubans or Haitians, with a range of current or past statuses, and
- People from Micronesia, Palau, or the Marshall Islands living in the U.S.
Starting December 31, 2025, lawfully present immigrants who earn less than the federal poverty level will no longer be able to get ACA subsidies.
Medicare
Starting July 2025, only these immigrants can get Medicare:
- Lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders),
- Cubans or Haitians, with a range of current or past statuses, and
- People from Micronesia, Palau, or the Marshall Islands living in the U.S.
If you are already enrolled in Medicare, you can keep your coverage until January 4, 2027
