NILC Statement on the Senate Parliamentarian’s Ruling to Exclude a Pathway to Citizenship from Budget Reconciliation Package
WASHINGTON — Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center and the NILC Immigrant Justice Fund, issued the following statement on today’s ruling by the Senate parliamentarian:
“Voters rejected the divisive anti-immigrant agenda of the last administration and gave Democrats a trifecta. We expect our elected leaders to make good on their promises to fight for a pathway to citizenship. No one elected the Senate parliamentarian, and we are encouraged that Senate Democratic leadership is exploring every mechanism available to deliver a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants. The stakes for our country are so high that if these efforts are unsuccessful, Democrats must take the steps necessary to negate the parliamentarian’s ruling. Simply giving up is not an option.
“While today’s ruling is a temporary setback, we will continue the fight for a pathway to citizenship until all immigrants are recognized as essential to our country so that we all have the freedom to thrive.”
