NILC Statement on Executive Order Making English Official U.S. Language

WASHINGTON — Kica Matos, president of the National Immigration Law Center (NILC), issued the following statement in response to reports that President Trump plans to sign an executive order making English the official language of the United States:

“Diversity is what makes America strong and unique. Even before the United States was founded, this land was, and it continues to be, home to hundreds of languages that reflect the different communities who have contributed to its success and vibrancy. This order will do nothing to unify the country. It is just another notch in Trump’s belt of cruelty and xenophobia that will make it harder for people to understand and access essential services, like education and health care, that we all need to thrive.”
