NILC Denounces Supreme Court Decision in Alien Enemies Act Case

WASHINGTON — Kica Matos, president of the National Immigration Law Center, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court greenlit the use of the Alien Enemies Act to send immigrants to be tortured abroad:

Today, the Supreme Court embraced the Trump administration’s abuse of an obscure, centuries-old law to send more immigrants abroad to be tortured. This abhorrent decision effectively authorizes U.S. government officials to abduct and disappear countless members of our communities on the flimsiest of pretexts with limited legal recourse. We encourage every immigrant in this country to know their rights under the constitution, call on people of conscience across the country to defend every member of our communities, and demand Congress repeal this abusive law.”
