E-Verify (antes conocido como Programa Piloto Básico) es un programa basado en Internet que es voluntario a nivel federal (excepto para ciertos contratistas federales) y que permite a los empleadores participantes verificar electrónicamente la elegibilidad de empleo de los trabajadores con el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de EE.UU. (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) y la Administración de la Seguridad Social (SSA, por sus siglas en inglés).
Se supone que E-Verify sólo debe utilizarse después de contratar a un trabajador, y después de que el empleador verifique la elegibilidad de empleo del trabajador utilizando un formulario oficial del gobierno llamado «Formulario I-9, Verificación de Elegibilidad de Empleo», generalmente conocido como el «formulario I-9». Dado que las bases de datos gubernamentales en las que se basa E-Verify contienen errores que pueden afectarle y que muchos empleadores no siguen las normas del programa, es importante que conozca cuáles son sus derechos.
