NILC Statement on Killing of Woman in Minneapolis by ICE
WASHINGTON — Kica Matos, president of the National Immigration Law Center, issued the following statement after an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis:
“Over the past year, the Trump administration has granted ICE agents virtual impunity to visit terror and violence on immigrant communities across our country. Today, in a horrifying tragedy, ICE agents shot and killed an unarmed woman. No matter how many lies this administration is already telling us about this shooting, our eyes can see this fundamental truth clearly.
“This tragedy is a reminder of the dangerous moment we find ourselves in, and our collective responsibility to defend our democracy and protect our neighbors. This moment calls on us to confront this administration and hold them accountable for repeatedly trampling on our fundamental rights and making communities less safe. Members of Congress must use their power to block new funding for DHS absent real changes that restrain the department’s many abuses. State and local officials can and should use every law at their disposal to hold ICE accountable and protect their residents.
“Everyone should be able to exercise their First Amendment rights to record ICE without fear of losing their lives. We join elected officials of conscience in Minnesota and across the country calling for ICE to get out of our cities and communities. The violence has to stop, immediately.”
