NILC Statement on Announcement SCOTUS Will Hear Birthright Citizenship Case

WASHINGTON — Kica Matos, president of the National Immigration Law Center, issued the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a high-stakes challenge to the Trump administration’s attempt to end birthright citizenship:

The 14th Amendment is clear that anyone born on U.S. soil is a U.S. citizen. In attempting to undo this bedrock principle of our democracy, the Trump administration is not only trying to unilaterally rewrite the Constitution, but also turn back the clock to a time when only certain Americans were deemed worthy of full recognition. The Supreme Court must resoundingly reject this shameful and racist effort to strip babies of their fundamental right to fully participate in the country of their birth, just as court after court has done for over a century.”
