NILC Denounces DOJ’s Indictment of Southern Poverty Law Center

WASHINGTON —Kica Matos, president of the National Immigration Law Center (NILC), issued the following statement after the Department of Justice announced an indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC):

“NILC stands in solidarity with our friends at SPLC who today are under attack from a president and an administration intent on weaponizing our justice system against its perceived enemies. For more than 50 years, SPLC has served as a bulwark against hate, extremism, and white supremacy and the Justice Department is deliberately targeting the organization because of the important work they do.

“Since Donald Trump returned to office last year, his administration has systematically targeted institutions and organizations opposing its assault on the rule of law. With this indictment, they are hoping to intimidate and silence all of us, but they will not succeed. Instead, we must and we will recommit to our collective fight for justice.”
