WASHINGTON, DC -- DREAM activists have poured into this city from as far
away as California to organize and to raise awareness of the DREAM Act,
a bipartisan piece of legislation that would provide a pathway to legal
status for undocumented young people who came to this country as
children, if they attend college or enlist in the military. In the
last week, DREAMers have staged a mock graduation, hosted a teach-in,
and arranged a briefing with university heads to raise awareness of the
pressing need for legislation to give undocumented students the tools to
contribute to our society.
“The momentum for Congress to finally pass this bipartisan bill has
never been stronger. Young people, business leaders, and educators
have all spoken out in favor of the DREAM Act, and as an original
cosponsor of the legislation, Majority Leader Reid (D-NV) continues to
state that DREAM is a major priority for him,” said Tyler Moran, policy
director for the National Immigration Law Center. “It’s time for
the rest of Congress to stand with Senators Reid, Durbin (D-IL), Lugar
(R-IN) and others to finally pass this bill.”
Added Adey Fisseha, policy attorney with the National Immigration Law
Center, “Today, DREAMers staged a mock graduation to remind Washington
that hundreds of thousands have waited long enough for the DREAM Act.
Like the youth of generations past, these young people are at the
forefront of social change. Without this important piece of
legislation, we risk losing future doctors, lawyers, teachers, and other
vital contributors to our communities.”
