College Aid for Battered Immigrants

 

Federal Financial Aid for College Available to Qualified Battered Immigrants
    The National Immigration Law Center (NILC), the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA), and Legal Momentum are pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) has determined correctly that “qualified” battered immigrant students are eligible for federal financial aid under the same rules that apply to citizens and other eligible immigrants.  DOE is developing procedures for providing aid to these domestic violence survivors while protecting their confidentiality.  Read more >>  (Posted 8/12/08.)

U.S. Senate Passes SSI Extension for Refugees and Other Humanitarian Immigrants

Victory in New York City -- and Materials Available on the Web

Immigrant Groups Win Citywide Language Access Executive Order in New York City (New York Immigration Coalition, 7/23/08).  The effort that went into this accomplishment, as well as the executive order itself, are models for the nation.  (The executive order is available here.)

Inquiries into Students’ Immigration Status Not Required, DHS Confirms

 

No federal requirement that school administrators inquire about students’ immigration status or report those who are undocumented, DHS confirms
    We regularly receive questions from college administrators and others who have asked whether federal law requires them to inquire about the immigration status of their students or to report undocumented immigrant students to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  DHS now has confirmed in writing that there is no such federal requirement.  Read more >>

U.S. House of Representatives Votes to Reauthorize E-Verify

 

NILC Statement upon House Reauthorization of Basic Pilot/E-Verify for Five More Years
    On July 31, 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to reauthorize the voluntary Basic Pilot/E-Verify program for an additional five years. The bipartisan bill, HR 6633, also included an agreement to reimburse the Social Security Administration (SSA) for its administration of the program and a requirement for two new studies on the program’s effects to be conducted by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The two studies will assess the impact of Basic Pilot/E-Verify on small businesses and further study the erroneous tentative nonconfirmation rate.  Read more >>  (7/31/08)

Most recently, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that nationals and former residents of Sudan may reregister for an additional 18 months of TPS.  The deadline for reregistering is Oct. 14, 2008.  A link to USCIS’s “Temporary Protected Status” information page is now available from NILC’s website.

ACLU Obtains Government “Manual” for Prepackaged Guilty Pleas for Prosecution of Immigrant Workers in Postville, Iowa  (link is to ACLU website)
   
FROM THE ACLU PRESS RELEASE:  “The [ACLU has] obtained a government ‘manual’ distributed to defense lawyers assigned to represent immigrant workers arrested and prosecuted in last May’s Postville, Iowa, meatpacking raids.  [It] contains prepackaged scripts for plea and sentencing hearings as well as documents providing for guilty pleas and waivers of rights that were used to push the more than 300 Postville workers through mass criminal proceedings as quickly as possible.”  (7/31/08)
