NILC recently
updated two resources that advocates working on driver’s license–related
issues might find useful: “Overview
of States’ Driver’s License Requirements” and “2007
State REAL ID Legislation.”
The “Overview” chart lists states by whether
they (1) require a Social Security number for a driver's license with no
exceptions; (2) require an SSN for a driver's license only of people who
have been assigned one or are eligible for one; (3) have lawful presence
requirements in the law; (4) have lawful presence requirements that are
created by agency policy or the combination of documents required of
driver’s license applicants; (5) don't have lawful presence
requirements; (6) accept the ITIN as an alternative to the SSN;
(7) accept the matrícula consular or other foreign ID card as a
form of ID; or (8) require that the driver’s license expire with an
immigrant’s visa.
The second chart lists REAL ID-related
legislation that had been introduced to state legislatures as of Feb. 5,
2007.
