In September
2008, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) announced
18-month extensions of temporary protected status (TPS) for
nationals and former residents of
El Salvador,
Honduras, and
Nicaragua. Individuals from these countries who
currently have TPS must reregister for the status within the
reregistration period for each country.
REREGISTRATION PERIODS
The
reregistration period for people from El Salvador began on
October 1 and ends on December 30, 2008.
CIS
announced on November 21 that the reregistration period for
people from Honduras and Nicaragua has been
extended to December 30, 2008. (Previously, the
reregistration was to expire on December 1.)
EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION
El
Salvador. On Dec. 15, 2008, USCIS
automatically extended the validity of employment authorization
documents (EADs) held by Salvadoran nationals in current TPS status
from Mar. 9, 2009, through Sept. 9, 2009.
Honduras
and Nicaragua. According to CIS's Nov. 21 announcement and
Federal Register notices published on November 24 (see "More
Information," below), the employment authorization documents (EADs)
of reregistrants from Honduras and Nicaragua WILL BE
AUTOMATICALLY EXTENDED through July 5, 2009. This represents a
change in policy, because the Oct. 1 Federal Register notices
implementing the extension of TPS for Hondurans and Nicaraguans
provide that reregistrants' EADs will not be automatically
extended.
