TPS for El Salvador,
Honduras, and Nicaragua to be extended |
|
Immigrants'
Rights Update, Vol. 20, Issue 1, March 23, 2006 |
|
The U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security has announced that
the designation of El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua as countries
whose nationals and residents currently in the United States qualify for
temporary protected status will be extended for another 12 months.
According to a Feb. 23, 2006, DHS press release, this TPS extension is
being made as part of the “continuing effort to assist El Salvador,
Honduras, and Nicaragua in recovering from the natural disasters that
[have] affected the Central American region.” The three countries
originally were designated under the TPS program in 1999 after they were
ravaged by Hurricane Mitch, which hit Central America in October 1998.
The press release notes
that procedures for reregistering for TPS, which provides permission to
remain temporarily in the United States and authorization to be employed
in the U.S., will be published in a forthcoming Federal Register
notice. Approximately 225,000 Salvadorans, 75,000 Hondurans, and 4,000
Nicaraguans qualify to reregister for TPS under this extension. The
extension will expire on Sept. 9, 2007, for El Salvador and on July 5,
2007, for Honduras and Nicaragua. |
