Regional immigrant worker strategy sessions to be held in Denver; Kansas City, Kansas; and Philadelphia

Immigrants' Rights Update, Vol. 19, No. 2, March 31, 2005

The Low-Wage Immigrant Worker (LWIW) coalition will host a series of three regional strategy sessions on issues concerning immigrant workers in May 2005 in Denver, Colorado; Kansas City, Kansas; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  The LWIW is convened by the AFL-CIO, National Council of La Raza (NCLR), and NILC, and is used as a forum for immigrants’ rights organizations and labor unions to develop strategies for addressing issues impacting low-wage immigrant workers.  In planning the strategy sessions, the LWIW is working with regional planning committees that are comprised of immigrants’ rights organizations and labor unions.

The strategy sessions will be an opportunity for immigrants’ rights organizations, labor unions, and others who work on behalf of immigrant workers to come together to develop a regional strategy to raise awareness about and address the dangerous and exploitative conditions under which many immigrants work.  It will also be an opportunity to learn about the different strategies that have been used in the region and to learn about immigrant workers’ protections under existing employment and labor laws.  The meeting will also address how advocates can support a federal low-wage worker bill and ensure that worker protections are included in immigration reform proposals.

To receive more information about the strategy sessions, please contact Luis Campillo at 202-216-0261 or campillo@nilc-dc.org.
