DREAMers of the Week
This week's DREAMers
of the week are all of Massachusetts' DREAM advocates. Their tireless
efforts have yielded co-sponsorship by every member of the Massachusetts
delegation!!! They are the first state to achieve this milestone.
Congratulations to all of you, this is an amazing achievement and one
that inspires us all to do the same in our home states.
Help Pass the DREAM Act in 2009!
Currently, 87 members of the House of
Representatives have cosponsored the DREAM Act. Please continue to
contact your representatives; our goal is to secure 109 cosponsors by
the end of July. (For more information and suggestions on
what to do, see below.)
Upcoming Events
Back-to-School Campaign. The United We
DREAM Network will be holding coordinated campaign events around the
country on September 23rd to highlight the DREAM Act. More details will
be available in the coming weeks.
Resources
The Immigration Policy
Center has
compiled research which shows that Ohio's immigrants, Latinos, and
Asians are an integral part of the state's economy and tax base. As
workers, taxpayers, consumers, and entrepreneurs, immigrants and their
children are an economic powerhouse.

The
Busted Halo Video Project aims to record the opinions and
experiences of immigrants in short video online "diaries." The
goal of the
Busted Halo® project is to put a human face on the issue by creating
a forum for stories and blogs by immigrants themselves.

Help Pass the DREAM Act in 2009!
Eighty-five (85) members of the House of
Representatives have cosponsored the DREAM Act. In order for the
act to pass the House, we need 218 votes. We are far short of the
votes we need if we want to see action on the DREAM Act during this
session of Congress.
To aid your efforts, we have developed
state-specific targets. The target list is made up of House
members who have either cosponsored in the past or are in districts with
large immigrant populations. For each target, we have provided
contact information and noted if they supported the DREAM Act in the
past.
Our goal is to secure 109 cosponsors by
the end of July. This means we have two weeks to get an additional
24 members to sign on as cosponsors!
Click on your region for details on your
state targets:
-
Northeast (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New
Jersey New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont)
-
Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri,
North Dakota, Ohio, Kansas, South Dakota, and Wisconsin)
-
South (Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky,
Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee,
Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia)
-
West (Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New
Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and Washington)
If your representative has already
cosponsored, please reach out to allies in other districts to help us
get the 218 yes votes we need to pass the DREAM Act this year
To tell us about your outreach efforts,
please send NILC's Tolu Olubunmi
an email message or use
this form.

DREAMer of the Week!
This week's DREAMers of the week are the
30 higher education associations who voiced their "strong support" for
the DREAM Act in
a letter to leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC).
The
letter reads, in part, "The DREAM Act . . . provides educational and
career opportunities for young people, many of whom are in this country
through decisions beyond their control, but have shown themselves
exceptional members of our communities and exhibit exemplary academic
achievement."
Gains
Walter Lara, a 23 year-old honor student
facing deportation on July 6, 2009, was granted a stay of deportation
last Thursday. Congratulations to Walter and all those who worked
tirelessly on his behalf. (Read Walter's
press statement.)
